Pilates is comprised of more than 500 exercises that are performed either in a mat-based workout or by using special resistance equipment that was developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 1900s. The equipment used in Pilates emphasizes spring resistance. Pilates training strengthens the core of the body - the deep abdominal muscles, gluteus muscles and the deep intrinsic muscles surrounding the spine. Pilates elongates the spine, increasing the elasticity of muscles and the flexibility of joints. It is the balance between strength and flexibility that reduces the potential for injury.
Pilates emphasizes the flowing movement that requires the use of multiple muscle groups simultaneously. Pilates avoids emphasizing on the strngth of stronger muscles while neglecting those that are already weak. By focusing on the balance between all working muscles, Pilates can benefit those recovering from injury as well as anyone seeking good posture. Controlled breathing and concentration are crucial, making Pilates a true workout for the body and the mind.
STOTT PILATES® is a contemporary approach to the original exercise method pioneered by the late Joseph Pilates. Co-founders Moira and Lindsay G. Merrithew, along with a team of physical therapists, sports medicie and fitness professionals, have spent more than a decade refining the STOTT PILATES® method of exercise and equipment. This resulted in the inclusion of modern principles of exercise science and spinal rehabilitation, making it one of the safest and effective methods available. This clear and detailed approach forms the basis for STOTT PILATES® training and certification programs. It is used by rehab and prenatal clients, athletes, celebrities, and everyone in between.

STOTT PILATES® follows the current standards practiced in the fitness industry regarding safety during pregnancy and the guidelines set out by professional organizations such as the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada. No two women's bodies are the same, and this is especially true during pregnancy. There are workouts that are quite appropriate for some people during pregnancy and not for others. During a normal, healthy pregnancy, moderate exercise is safe for the fetus. Exercise is also said to prevent varicose veins, hemorrhoids and low back pain and helps to boost self esteem, maintain fitness levels and prepare the body for the physical demands of motherhood.

Jodi is the Owner of NWA Pilates and has been a dedicated student and teacher of the Pilates method for over ten years. After her own very personal success story with Pilates, she knew she needed to share the gift of Pilates. Jodi is a proud graduate of the STOTT PILATES® Certification Program, a Certified ME barre and CORE Barre Teacher, an AIS (Active Isolated Stretching) Teacher, a Certified Health Coach, and has experience working with prenatal and rehabilitation clients. Jodi firmly believes that making a lifestyle change, including eating healthy and being active, is the only way to live a longer, healthier, and happier life.

At the age of 8, Savannah was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, at age 11 she was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis. She had extreme pain in her joints and throughout her entire body. After many unsuccessful attempts to heal her body, a doctor recommend she try Pilates. Initially, very basic Pilates exercises were extremely challenging for her. After about a year of consistent Pilates practice, Savannah's then instructor planted the seed about her becoming an instructor to share with others the wonderful benefits of Pilates. Pilates had always been Savannah's saving grace and she knew she just had to share it with others.

Terri has been practicing Pilates for 5 years and teaching STOTT PILATES® Reformer classes for one year. She had always enjoyed many different forms of exercise, but fell in love with the way Pilates made her feel. Injuries from other forms of exercise forced her to submerge herself fully in the STOTT PILATES® method. Terri quickly found her newfound strength helped her keep up with her family of five children and a supportive husband. Her knowledge of the Pilates method continues to inspire her students and clients to continue mastering the technique for their own personal growth and achievement.

Rebecca is a California Native, most recently from Chicago, and has been in Northwest Arkansas since 2011. She has been active her entire life, walking, biking, swimming, hiking, you name it. Rebecca firmly believes that focus on core strength and stability is important to all movement in life. Rebecca is a STOTT PILATES® trained instructor and loves to teach her clients functional fitness at all levels. Laura is a mostly native Arkansan, residing here since she was 8 years old. In November 2013, Laura found NWA Pilates and began taking mat & ME Barre classes and was instantly hooked! She connected with the mind-body experience and how she could see and feel the overall benefits of Pilates after each session. It was then that Laura decided to become an instructor and share her love of Pilates! Laura is a Certified ME Barre Teacher and a proud mommy to her sweet baby girl, Hazel! Laura contributes her ability to "bounce back after Hazel" to her consistent Pilates practice before, during, and after.

Martha is a native of Springdale,AR, and received her B.A. in Dance at Randolph College. After recently moving back to NWA, Martha wanted to discover movement through a different set of lenses, and decided to take a ME Barre class at NWA Pilates. The connection between ME Barre and her dance training were very in sync that she knew this was a match for her! Martha is extremely excited to be apart of the NWA Pilates family, and cannot wait to share her energy and passion for movement through ME Barre with her students!

Mat Pilates is done on a Pilates mat, using a sequence of exercises designed to strengthen the core muscles of the pelvis, abdomen and back to improve balance, trunk strength and flexibility, and relieve chronic pain. The use of props, such as stability balls, pilates circles, toning balls, and stretch bands, can be incorporated to assist during an exercise or to challenge the participant during the sequence.
The Pilates Reformer is an amazing piece of equipment that uses spring based resistance to strengthen and lengthen your muscles in record time. Springs, leverage, and body weight are used as resistance while performing movements targeting specific muscle groups. Workouts consist of controlled, flowing movements working your muscles through a full range of motion. The reformer adds increased resistance to the movement.
This class uses various pieces of Pilates Equipment such as, the Pilates Reformer, the Pilates Tower/Spring Wall, and the Pilates Chair to take your Pilates workout to the next level. The stability chair is considered to be the most challenging piece of Pilates equipment in terms of building strength in the legs and shoulders. The spring wall is ideal for new people who experience neck tension, and people with disc issues.
This class incorporates challenging stability ball modifications to improve core strength, balance and endurance. Besides developing good overall muscle tone for your entire body, the ball provides numerous other benefits that range anywhere from rehabilitating back, hip, and knee injuries to delivering a powerful workout to improve core stability, posture, and muscle balance.

In some respects Pilates is like Yoga. Both are considered mind-body type methods of movement; both emphasize deep breathing and smooth, long movements that encourage the mind-body connection. The difference is that while Yoga requires moving from one static (still) posture to the next, Pilates flows through a series of movements that are more dynamic, systematic and anatomically-based incorporating resistance equipment. The goal with STOTT PILATES® exercise is to strengthen the postural muscles while achieving optimal functional fitness.
STOTT PILATES® considers its training style to be the “contemporary approach” to Pilates. STOTT PILATES®, with the use of physical therapists, anatomists and biomechanical experts, looked at the exercises that comprised Joseph Pilates original teachings and combined that with what we now know about how the body functions and developed a new approach. STOTT PILATES® created modifications for many of the exercises in order to better suit all body types including those recovering from injury. Performing a postural analysis in order to better program for all clients was included. STOTT PILATES® prides itself on training the body to re-establish the natural curves of the spine whereas Joseph Pilates’ teachings were all done in a flat back position. Although you should always consult your physician before starting any fitness routine, a Pilates workout is gentle and controlled with no sudden jarring actions. It is therefore more important that you work with a qualified instructor to ensure that you are doing the movements correctly. An experienced instructor will be able to modify the exercises to accommodate your limitations, continually challenge you within your range and monitor your improvements. If you commit yourself to a consistent workout schedule you will certainly feel results.
You can expect an increase in strength, flexibility, mobility, balance, and body awareness, as well as a decrease in back pain or other general pains.
Pilates alone is not a weight loss program. Pilates can be a positive addition to your overall weight loss program. Weight loss occurs when the number of calories consumed is less than the number of calories expended. The most successful and healthy way to achieve weight loss is an exercise plan that includes an aerobic component coupled with a strength training component, such as STOTT PILATES® exercise, and following a balanced diet. Combining Pilates with aerobic exercise also offers additional benefits: greater mind-body connection, improved posture, flexibility and functionality.
Pilates is three-dimensional (i.e. exercises can be performed using all movement planes). Spring resistance more closely resembles muscular contraction. Emphasis is on concentric/eccentric contraction for injury prevention. STOTT PILATES® exercise is customizable for special needs. In Pilates exercise, emphasis is placed on rebalancing muscles around the joints. Pilates corrects over-training and muscle imbalance that leads to injury. Pilates emphasizes balancing strength with flexibility (for injury prevention and more efficient movement). STOTT PILATES® exercise leads to an improvement in posture and body awareness. Weight training and STOTT PILATES® can be combined in your fitness program and are a great compliment to each other.
The average active person doing 2-3 classes per week should see some results within 10-12 classes. This will vary depending on each individual and other factors such as the number of classes a person takes each week, whether they are private or group classes, whether they participate in other physical activities, and whether they have any existing injuries. It is also important to work with a well trained instructor.
STOTT PILATES® exercise is a musculo-skeletal conditioning program. It is ideal in combination with some kind of cardiovascular exercise (walking, running, aerobics, aqua fitness etc.), and a great compliment to your weight training program.
All participants must be 16 years or older to participate in classes.
All sessions must be paid for in advance using our Online Class Scheduler. This will ensure your preferred appointment time is reserved. Contact us with questions regarding this policy.
All cancellations or rescheduling requests require 24 hours notice. No exceptions other than medical emergencies. If cancellation is not received within 24 hours of appointment, you are responsible for payment of the session. Monthly Unlimited clients will be charged a fee for not attending class or failing to give 24 hours advance notice. All cancellations can be made through the Online Class Scheduler or call/text (479) 586-4744.
NWA PILATES does not offer refunds. If for any reason you need to discontinue your Pilates practice, your session will be placed on hold for up to six months.
